WC/BB CLASS -As modified (rebuilt)

The rail photos in this portfolio feature the original Bulleid pacifics of the West Country and Battle of Britain classes which were innovative steam locos, capable of high speed running and considerable haulage feats. Unfortunately, some of Bulleid's new ideas were difficult to maintain in actual operation leading to unreliability on occasions. As a result, the distinctive air smoothed outline of the original Bulleid pacifics began to disappear in the late 1950s as a number were rebuilt to a more conventional design by Jarvis. Examples of both unmodified and modified locos survived in frontline passenger haulage until the completion of electrification and dieselisation of the Waterloo to Weymouth and Salisbury lines in the summer of 1967. They therefore played a key role in the 'Waterloo Sunset' of that summer, attracting large numbers of devotees anxious to photograph and/or travel behind the surviving Bulleids. Many footplate crew shared that enthusiasm and ensured that Southern Steam went out with a flourish. Read more of the inside stories at the Nine Elms enginmen website...
